Estrogen-independent activation of estrogen receptors.

چکیده
Sex differences showing a lower prevalence and better outcome after ischemic stroke in women have been described, differences that are abrogated by natural or surgical menopause.1,2 High levels of endogenous estrogens in premenopausal women have been associated with reduced risk for a number of diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, vascular disease, and stroke.2 The growing number of postmenopausal women attributed to shifts in world demographics also requires special action for the prevention and treatment of these conditions.2 Clinical and preclinical studies indicate that natural estrogens, such as 17 -estradiol, exert profound protective effects in the adult and the aging brain.1,3 Three proteins have been identified to mediate the effects of estrogens: estrogen receptor (ER) , ER , and G protein–coupled ER (GPER).2,4 Although expression and function of ER and ER have been well studied under physiological conditions, information about their function and expression under disease conditions, particularly in stroke,1 is still scarce.2,4

Role of melatonin receptors in the effect of estrogen on brain edema, intracranial pressure and expression of aquaporin 4 after traumatic brain injury
Objective(s): Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most common causes of death and disability in modern societies. The role of steroids and melatonin is recognized as a neuroprotective factor in traumatic injuries. This study examined the role of melatonin receptors in the neuroprotective effects of estrogen. Materials and Methods: Seventy female ovariectomized Wistar rats were divided in...
متن کاملEstrogens Receptors-New Players in Spermatogenesis
The mammalian testis is a complex organ that serves two important functions, synthesis of steroids, with significant amount of estrogenic hormones produced and production of spermatozoa. Estrogen receptors (ERs) are expressed in cells of the testis as well as the epididymal epithelium. We have demonstrated that estrogen receptor expression is higher in reproductive tissues as compared to non-re...
متن کاملDopaminergic Activation of Estrogen Receptors Induces Fos Expression within Restricted Regions of the Neonatal Female Rat Brain
Steroid receptor activation in the developing brain influences a variety of cellular processes that endure into adulthood, altering both behavior and physiology. Recent data suggests that dopamine can regulate expression of progestin receptors within restricted regions of the developing rat brain by activating estrogen receptors in a ligand-independent manner. It is unclear whether changes in n...
متن کاملThe Effects of Estrogen Receptors' Antagonist on Brain Edema, Intracranial Pressure and Neurological Outcomes after Traumatic Brain Injury in Rat
Background: In previous studies, the neuroprotective effect of 17&beta-estradiol in diffuse traumatic brain injury has been shown. This study used ICI 182,780, a non-selective estrogen receptor antagonist, to test the hypothesis that the neuroprotective effect of 17&beta-estradiol in traumatic brain injury is mediated by the estrogen receptors. Methods: The ovariectomized rats were divided into...
متن کاملPhytoestrogens: recent developments
Phytoestrogens are polyphenolic non-steroidal plant compounds with estrogen like activity exerted through estrogen receptors. These receptors are distributed in several tissues such as male and female reproductive systems, bones, cardiovascular and central nervous systems. These natural phenolic compounds include isoflavonoids, flavonoids, lignans and stilbenes. Isoflavonoids are the most studi...
